Design

HTC One has curved aluminium rear, plastic sides where as Apple’s iPhone 5 is equipped with flat aluminium rear, slate and white finishes. HTC One is considered as the only Android smartphone in the top-end segment to compete with the iPhone 5 in terms of design. Both the phones are light weight and have cool, hard feel of metal.

HTC One weighs 143g where as iPhone 5 is lighter by weighing just 112g. Both are gorgeous but iPhone 5 easily fits in small hand and can be operated comfortably with a thumb. HTC One is a bit taller and a thumb needs to be stretched to use all the functionality comfortably.

Screen

HTC One sports 4.7-inch Super LCD3 screen providing a resolution of 1080p where as the iPhone 5 features 4-inch IPS screen with resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels.

Though both the smartphones have different screen technologies but the results are almost same. Super LCD3 screen is easily comparable in tone to that of IPS.

Both the smartphones make use of traditional backlights providing natural-looking colors, contrast as well as black levels.

Even though the 4.7-inch screen is larger than that of iPhone 5, the pixel density of the former is still greater due to stunning 1080p resolution panel. HTC One has got 468 ppi pixel density and the iPhone 5 has 326 ppi.

CPU and Memory

HTC One is packed with quad-core 1.7GHz Krait 300 processor, 2GB of RAM and Adreno 320 GPU. The iPhone 5 comes with dual-core 1.2GHz Apple A6 CPU, 1GB of RAM and the GPU is PowerVR SGX 543MP3.

Specification wise the HTC One is the smartphone to go with. It has quad-core chip where as the iPhone 5 has a 2-core processor. HTC One has double RAM than iPhone 5.

It is little tough to compare the real-world performance but still it is seen that the HTC One is defeated by the iPhone 5 in the Sunspider java benchmark. In some situation the PowerVR GPU also beats the Adreno 320.

Storage

HTC One comes in two versions – 32GB and 64GB on-board storage. Its memory is non-expandable. The iPhone 5 comes in 16, 32 and 64GB on-board storage. Its memory too is non-expandable via any external cards.

Transferring files are easier in HTC as it gives direct access to the on-board memory that becomes a media drive when plugged with a computer. In iPhone 5 user is tied to iTunes whether in Wi-Fi connection or through Wire.

Software

HTC One runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system and is equipped with Sense UI for better performance. The iPhone 5 runs on the latest iOS 6.1 operating system.

The new HTC Sense 5 user interface in the HTC One is different from the earlier versions of Sense. It has got more spare and stark look. Its BlinkFeed feature is amazing with scrolling home page related to latest digital updates such as Facebook news feeds, Twitter feeds, RSS feeds etc. It is stylish and also operates great.

The iOS 6.1 is quite familiar to the earlier versions of iOS with similar set of pages filled with app icons. Well, the latest update has got a great look.

Camera

HTC One comes with 4-megapixel UltraPixel sensor accompanied with a LED flash. The iPhone 5 is mounted with 8-megapixel of sensor and a LED flash.

One question arises that iPhone 5 may be giving double the performance as it has got double the pixel. Right? But the answer is NO.

The UltraPixel sensor of HTC One is larger than normal and hence it gives improved performance in low-light. Well, the iPhone 5 does offer more detail in good light. But the main comparison is done in low light and the HTC One wins here.

The HTC One lens has got aperture of F/2 where as that of iPhone 5 is F2.4. The F relates to the speed of the lens as to how much light can be sucked-in at a certain exposure time.

HTC One vs iPhone 5 – Price

The pricing part of HTC One has not yet been revealed but T-Mobile has announced of selling it for $99 as down payment under no contract. The remaining will be paid in equal installments. It is rumored the phone may be tagged around $600.

The iPhone 5 is made available at a price tag of $199, $299 and $399 for the 16, 32 and 64GB respectively under two-year contract on AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. T-Mobile has lately announced selling it contractless with a down payment of $99.99.
