Many users of the Moto E smartphone have complained of random reboots, wherein the handset will power off and turn on by itself, often frequently.
Follow the steps given below to resolve the issue:
- Completely power off the Moto E. Wait for a few seconds to a minute and then turn on the device. Users may also perform a soft reset. It does not delete any data.
- Ensure that the display is turned on.
- Now, press and hold the power key for about ten seconds; ignore if any kind of pop-up menu is displayed on the screen and continue pressing. The device will automatically restart.
- Go to Play Store – > Menu – > My Apps – > tap on Update All option located at top right corner. This will update all apps to their current versions.
- Go Settings – > About Phone – > system updates, to update the android OS and other software to its latest version.
- Clear the cache of all the apps that you may use frequently; or you may clear the cache of the apps which you think may be causing the random reboots. For this, go to Settings – > Apps – > swipe to get to the ‘All’ tab – > tap on a specific app – > tap on clear cache.
- If random reboots continue, then the issue may be related to the presence of buggy or corrupt apps which may conflict with the OS and cause varied problems, including random reboots. Safe mode disables such third-party apps. Hence, users can run the Moto E in safe mode and check if the issue persists. If the phone does not reboot at random in safe mode, then it can be said with surety that some buggy app or apps is the cause. Later, users may delete each app one by one to find the corrupt app or apps. To launch safe mode,
- Press the power key and later tap and hold the ‘power off’ option till the ‘reboot to safe mode’ option/window is seen. Select ok and the phone will reboot in the safe mode.
- The safe mode reboot screen can be recognized by the words ‘safe mode’ which appear on the lower left hand corner of the display.
- The above process can be time consuming and tedious, especially if you have installed numerous apps on the device. In such cases, users have the option to skip the safe mode app uninstall process and directly reset the Moto E to its original factory settings. A factory reset however erases everything from the device, including all data. Hence, back up the data before the reset. For a factory reset,
- Go to Menu – > Settings – > Backup & Reset – > Factory Data reset – > tap on agree – > tap on Reset Phone. Ensure that all the data is backed up before trying this.
- Sometimes, the above screen factory reset process may not work due to varied causes, or users may be unable to perform the reset due to an unresponsive screen, or random reboots, etc. In such cases, Moto E owners may use the hardware buttons to carry out the reset. For a factory reset using the phone’s hardware buttons,
- Power off the phone.
- Hold down the ‘volume down’ key for a few seconds and then press the power key and then release the keys.
- Different boot options are seen.
- Scroll down to ‘recovery’ using the volume down button and select it by using the volume up button.
- The Motorola logo followed by android in distress image are seen.
- Press and hold down the volume up button for 10 to 15 seconds. During this time tap and release the power button.
- Additional menu options in blue hue are seen.
- Now, scroll to ‘wipe data/factory reset’ option using volume down key and select it using the power key
- Choose ‘YES – delete all user data’ option using the volume down key.
- Press the power button to ‘confirm.’
- After the formatting is over, confirm/select the reboot option by pressing the power button.
- The Moto E will reboot and power up normally.
- If the issue persists, then it may be a hardware fault. Visit a service center for repair or replacement of your Moto E.
