The Samsung Note is one of the best android smartphones to come out of the Samsung stable. Without much ado, let’s get down to reviewing its specifications, battery life and other brilliant features.
Samsung Galaxy Note – Size, weight. Does it fit in the pocket ?
The Gorilla Glass display is huge at 5.3 inches and the 1,280 x 800 pixel (WXGA) resolution is one that will definitely catch the eye. At 285 ppi, it is the first android smartphone to come close to match the resolution of the iPhone 4S.
One may take some time to get used to the big size of the phone, but it is actually quite comfortable in the hands and is a snug fit in the pocket. Despite its wide size, the Note is really thin at 9.65 mm and also very light at only 178 grams. There may be one shortcoming to the phone. In cases, where the pocket material is very thin, there is a tendency for the phone to automatically turn on. One may need to set a PIN code or use a lock screen pattern to prevent this from happening.
Like most Samsung smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy Note also has only three buttons at the front, i.e. two touch-sensitive menu buttons and physical home button, in addition to the keys at the back. The touch-sensitive menu is generally invisible and will temporarily light up when the phone is in use. An S Pen stylus can be stored at the bottom near micro-USB port, the power button is to the right, the volume buttons are on the left and the 3.5mm audio jack is at the top of the smartphone.
The microSD card slot is located underneath the cover and one has to remove the battery in order to change microSD cards.
Samsung Galaxy Note Specs
The Samsung Note comes with the TouchWiz 4.0 interface and runs on Android Gingerbread. The operating system can be updated with Ice Cream Sandwich update in the future. The interface has seven home screens with the option to scroll continuously that allows one to jump from the first page to the last without having to visit the other pages.
Like the Samsung S2, the Note also comes with Voice Talk that allows you to use audio controls for many activities such as opening an app or calling a contact. There are several data connectivity features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, HSPA+ and FM Radio. There is an 8 megapixel rear camera with autofocus and LED flash and a 2 megapixel front facing camera.
Samsung Galaxy Note Battery, Processor
The highlight of the Note is the battery performance. The Li-ion 2,500mAh battery gives close to 610 hours of battery backup in 3G standby, and up to 9 hours of talk time in 3G mode. Under test conditions that involve the use of two email accounts and Twitter on push and with Facebook on a two hour refresh period, the battery generally lasted for just under two days. This is spectacular for a smartphone with such a larger display. There is an inbuilt battery meter that showed that most of the battery drain occurred due to the operating system which speaks volumes about the battery performance on the Samsung Note.
The Note comes with a Mali-400MP GPU and a Dual-core 1.4GHz ARM Cortex-A9 Exynos processor that gives really zippy performance when it comes to the use of various apps, multi-tasking and even while playing games.
The speaker volume is loud enough for one to hear the ring, while the phone is in the pocket. Also, call quality is good without any great problems.
So, in case you are looking for a smartphone that has the display size and display quality of a tablet, but not as large or expensive, then the Samsung Note is the phone for you. Compare this phone with Samsung Galaxy S2 review .
