The Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X are two of the best new Android phones that will hit the market in the near future. A comparison between the two is provided below:
The Screen:
At 4.8 inches, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has one of the largest and the best displays, second only to the Note. It is HD Super AMOLED with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. The bigger screen means that the pixel density is less at 309 ppi, which may not make much of a difference for the average user. The screen offers a vivid display of colors and deep contrasts that leaves even the really good display quality of the HTC One X far behind.
The display of the HTC One X may be outshined by the S3, but one cannot discount the 4.7 inch Super IPS LCD 2 display of the One X. It has 720p HD resolution support. Additionally the screen is made of super strong Gorilla glass, which protects it from scratches and other forms of physical damage.
The Design:
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is thinner as compared to HTC One X and is just 8.6 mm thick. It is very light at 133g and even though it is comparatively big in size, it is very comfortable in the hands. This is due to the curved edges and the rounded-oval shape of the device. The smartphone is available in two colors, i.e. one with a white glossy finish and another with a metal brushed dark blue shade. The body primary comprises of plastic, which gives it a plastic-like feel. Some users who prefer metal bodies may deem the S3 to be substandard as far as the body is concerned.
The HTC One is also a pretty large phone as it comes with the dimensions 134.36 mm x 69.9 mm x 8.9 mm. The large size, which includes an enormous 4.7 inch screen notwithstanding, the One X weighs a wee bit less that the S3 at 130g and can easily slot into one’s pocket. It has a unibody design that gives it a stunning look. The top of the One X has a 3.5mm headphone jack along with the power button, the right hand side has a volume rocker and the bottom end of the phone is home to three touch sensitive buttons. The left side has a slot which is a Mobile HD link to enable connection to a television. The major drawback of this phone is that it comes with a micro SIM card, which does not facilitate easy transfer of SIM from one phone to another. The smartphone is available in grey and white colors.
The Processor:
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is powered by a hefty quad core Exynos processor which can give speed of up to 1.4 GHz. As a pure number, the processor has lower capability than that of the HTC One X. But one will hardly notice any difference between the performances offered by the processors of the two smartphones. This can be verified by the Pop Up Play feature that comes with the S3, which allows fantastic access to videos while concurrently engaging in boring tasks such as texting or writing a letter. There are no stutters or lags in HD video playback or in multitasking.
The American version of the One X comes with a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core S4 processor, which offers similar performance as compared to S3. The 1 GB of RAM also adds power to the free-flowing multitasking, HD playback, etc. offered by this smartphone. This additional power does affect the battery life, though.
The Apps and Software:
The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, which is modified with TouchWiz, Samsung’s own user interface. Hence there are a number of preinstalled apps, widgets and bloatware that may be unwanted by the user. However, the OS comes loaded with a number of apps such as Pop Up Play; S Voice, which is the equivalent of Apple’s Siri and allows access of music, weather, calls, etc. through voice commands; S Beam that allows transfer of large files via Wi-Fi; facial recognition, photo tagging and a host of other features, which pushes the S3 a bit ahead of the One X.
The HTC One X also comes with the Ice Cream Sandwich OS which is plastered with the HTC Sense 4 UI. However, it does not interfere with the OS as much as TouchWiz, and also has fewer bloatware.
The Storage
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is a mega storehouse of a smartphone. The S3 is available with the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage options. Additionally, there is a microSD card slot that can support an additional 64GB card. To top this, every purchase of the S3 comes with a two year DropBox storage option that allows users to store 50GB of data. Such content in the cloud can be accessed from any device.
The HTC One X loses out to the S3 when it comes to storage capability. It comes with 32 GB of internal storage with no support for microSD card. One can however take solace from the 25GB of DropBox facility that comes integrated with the smartphone.
The Video recording and Camera:
The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with an 8 megapixel rear camera that supports a number of features. Some of such features include zero shutter lag and a unique option wherein there will be an automatic suggestion of the best shot chosen from a series of similar photos captured. This suggestion is not random but based on factors like smile detection, facial recognition, etc. One can also choose to take snaps while shooting a video. On the front is a 2 megapixel camera that can be used for video calling and supports facial recognition. As long as the front camera can detect your face, it will prevent the dimming of the screen. The rear camera supports 1080p video recording while the secondary one supports 720p video shooting.
The HTC One X has an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 1.3 megapixel secondary camera. The rear camera supports 1080p video shooting, while the front one can be used for video calls. The S3 is better in this area due to the various additional camera features.
