Which smartphone you would buy if you hold HTC Butterfly on one hand and the Samsung Galaxy S3 on the other? This is the big question striking to most of the potential customers as both the phones are equally good on macro level. Both have got their own pros and cons. Let us find answers for which phone to go based on the side-by-side comparison as below.

HTC Butterfly sports 5-inch Super LCD3 screen providing a resolution of 1920 x 1080 resolution with 440 ppi full HD display. Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with 4.8-inch Super AMOLED screen with resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.

Here I would give thumbs up to HTC Butterfly.

Size and weight

HTC Butterfly is 70.5mm wide where as the Samsung Galaxy S3 measures 70.6mm. HTC Butterfly is taller and measures 143mm and the Samsung Galaxy S3 is 136.6mm in height.

HTC Butterfly is beefier than the Samsung Galaxy S3. It weighs 140g and the opponent is 133g.

The clear winner here according to me is Samsung Galaxy S3.

Processor

HTC Butterfly is powered with new Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5GHz core processor equipped with 2GB of RAM where as the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with Exynos 4412 quad-core 1.4GHz Cortec-A9 processor with similar 2GB of RAM.

The winner here for me is HTC Butterfly again.

Operating system

Both are Android-based smartphone. HTC Butterfly comes out of the box with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and is upgradeable to the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) OS and is upgreadeable to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system.

Memory

HTC Butterly comes with an internal storage of 16GB and can be expandable up to 32GB via microSD card. The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes in three variants based on internal storage – 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. This too can be expandable to up to 64GB via microSD card.

I would like to give thumbs up to Samsung Galaxy S3 because it carries vast on-board memory.

Connectivity

HTC Butterfly comes with NFC (near field communication), Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, 3G/HSDPA and Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP connectivity. Samsung on the other hand has jammed its Galaxy S3 with NFC, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, 3G/HSDPA, Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP and EDR.

Camera

HTC Butterfly is mounted with 8-megapixel rear camera providing a resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels. It is equipped with features like autofocus, LED flash, touch focus, face/smile detection, simultaneous video/photo recording and 1080p video recording and geo-tagging. The smartphone is also equipped with 2.1-megapixel front camera to facilitate video calling.

Samsung Galaxy S3 too comes with 8-megapixel rear camera featuring autofocus, LED flash, touch focus, geo-tagging, image stabilization, face/smile detection and 1080 video recording. It is mounted with front camera of 1.9-megapixel.

Battery

HTC Butterfly is fueled with 2020 mAh Li-Polymer battery and the Samsung Galaxy S3 is packed with 2100 Li-Ion battery.

Winner here is slightly Samsung Galaxy S3 but it depends on what technology both the smartphones uses in saving the battery life. Also, the HTC Butterfly is equipped with bigger screen and better resolution than the Samsung Galaxy S3, so it may consume more battery power.

We see HTC Butterfly comes with GPS/A-GPS, accelerometer, digital compass, NFC, gyroscope, TV-out, stereo FM radio, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot and Beats Audio.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 on the other hand features GPS/A-GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, NFC, digital compass, barometer, S-Voice, TV-out, Smart Stay eye-tracking and stereo FM radio with RDS.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 wins here because of its S-Voice technology, which is similar to the Siri voice assistant of Apple’s iDevices.

Price

The HTC J Butterfly is priced tagged at $788 SIM-free, without contract.

With the launch of Samsung Galaxy S4 retailers are slashing the price of Galaxy S3. On Amazon today it is found to be available for a price of $441.29. The listed price is $899.99.
